  • Prostate cancer risk is higher in men who have a family history of the disease
  • Men who are over the age of 55 and men who smoke are at increased risk
  • African American men have a higher risk for prostate cancer than other races
  • Other risk factors for prostate cancer include high-fat diet and exposure to chemicals

Risk Factors



A family history of prostate cancer increases the risk. Other possible risk factors include the following:

  • 55 years old and older
  • Diet high in saturated fat
  • Exposure to heavy metals (e.g., cadmium)
  • Race (African American)
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Smoking
